MISSION: WWF MELAKA HAWKSBILL TURTLE CONSERVATION PROJECT

(ps: due to some crappy log in problem in blogspot, i lost my whole blog post on turtle conservation from day 2 to day 6 which i spent almost 4 hours writing. i was really pissed! all the memory gone and now wat is left is only a short summary)

DAY 2
MONDAY
20090518

Location: Padang Kemunting

9.00 pm - Visit Melaka Turtle Hatchery Center managed by Fisheries Department.

4.30 am - Turtle located up shore by sounds and tracks. Started digging under the bench. Pak Harun helped dig the hole as well following the turtle's rhythm. 3 enemies in sigh but the turtle was in Pak Harun's perimeter, so all the eggs were saved! Burried eggs one by one in hatchery.

3.13 am - *Beep* Come in private ning. No turtle sighted. I repeat. No turtle sighted. Got 1 fish though. How bout ur side private? Over.
4.01 am - Yu hu very fresh eh? I feel ok here. Where all the turtle go a? Aiyoyo we followed a bunch of fish. Like fish hunting like that. Sigh sigh sigh! (Pak Amin brought along his fishing rod to fish by the sea side. Fish shadows similiar to turtle can be seen at the sea. Cat shadows spotted as well. Cock crowed. Pak Amin also built mini campfire so no mozzies!)



DAY 3
TUESDAY
20090519

Location: Pulau Upeh
Hokkien fishermen spotted on jetty. Bright lights and noises may deter turtles.
Chit chat and laugh out loud with Mai, Nurul and Arvin.
Hide from rain in the surau of abandoned resort.
Turtle spotted in the morning. Eggs collected.
Attacked by swarm of sandflies.
Due to delay of time, tide very low at jetty entrance back to mainland.
All crews out of boat into smelly sea water to push the boat.
Pvt ning lost one side of the slipper.
Eggs transported at 40km/hour speed on jeep to hatchery.

9.01pm - Yes private, msg accepted. Report n survey perimeter? Reached Pak Harun's perimeter (P. Kemunting) ald private. Over
10.06pm - Hopefully can see turtles. My hope is not up.
10.48pm - Here with Nazarul, fren, Pak Amin n Richard. Nice cosy little campfire.
12.35 am - Got bout 10 baby turtles ald in d box we see. So cute. 2day i follow Pak Harun wit Nazarul.



DAY 4
WEDNESDAY
20090520

Location: Pasir Gembur
Patrol Time:
8.50 pm - Arrive at location
9.00 pm - First patrol.
10.30 pm
11.45 pm - Detected turtle tracks near Balik Batu. By the tracks, estimated turtle only came up shore for approx. 10 minutes without laying any eggs.
1.00 am
1.45 am - Pak Amin belanja eat fruit, sing songs, joke about 'strong'.
2.35 am - Turtle spotted. Size is big. Turtle went into enemy (poacher Mat Ali)'s base.
3.25 am - Turtle relocated by man power. Turtle left and back to sea.
4.30 am
5.10 am
- No turtle eggs.

9.47 pm - Come in private ning. Situation is silent and cooling here. No sign of foretold turtles yet. Hopefully premonition accurate. Report location private. Over.
10.05 pm - Others asleep. Me still fresh like tembikai susu! But the wind quite cooling here with the warm simen. No fishermen 2day.
4.40 am - No luck seeing turtles.


DAY 5
THURSDAY
20090521

Location: Pulau Upeh
Patrol Time:
9.00 pm - My shift. High tide. Fishing nets near beach.
10.15 pm
11.30 pm
12.45 pm - My shift. Low tide.
2.00 am - My shift. Recharge with chocolate milk.
3.15 am
4.30 am
5.45 am - My shift. High tide.
6.45 am - All do final check for turtles.
7.00 am - No turtles spotted. Leave on Misai 2 navigated by Pak Ali.

Reports fr Pvt. Eve at Padang Kemunting & Pasir Gembur :
7.06 pm - Hey private. U r cordially invited 2 our glamorous resort in seremban, complete wif a luxurious suite n scrumptious cuisine dinner at the garden pool. Chaffeur on saturday.
9.14 pm - Private, touch down at 2100 at destination. Perimeter invaded by enemy. Current count: 2. Target: 0. Report situation. Over.
10.14 pm - I dint know u got promoted. Wif Pak Harun here. And super fast Richard. Fu sweating ald!
2.46 am - Sergeant sergeant! Target spotted! V r under attack, i repeat, v r under attack! Ahh! Defend! Ah! Sergeant! Report! Injured (turtle): 1. Refugees (eggs rescued to the hatchery): 83. Casualties (eggs continued to be laid on flat ground after poachers forcefully shifted the turtle while laying): 40.
6.09 am - Aiyo tis sergeant can fire ald. Demoted! Casualties has been lost 2 enemies (poachers). But v r not weak, revenge has been taken. Total 128 refugees were saved on enemy grid (mat ali's house).



DAY 6
FRIDAY
20090522

Location: Pasir Gembur

12.30 am - Getting frustrated with no turtles spotted. However, things changed after reading an article in the WWF magazine on Richard's car. Realize conservation effort is not easy and requires most importantly perseverance.
4.00 am
No Turtle Spotted.

11.52 am - Hey sergeant. Yes, our last nite on battle grounds. Target spotted upon arrival. Target was slow to depart. 8pm to 10.30pm. Refugees(eggs): 133
1.17 am - D turtle was very long winded. Here is bit cooling but it feels good.
6.14 am - Hey sergeant. Coast is clear. No target in sight yet. U hav slumber?
6.25 am - Roger that sergeant. As long as u enjoy d las nite. Eone is sleepin here. Soon gonna finish las round patrol den head home. Remember to pack!



DAY 7
SATURDAY
